56 primary school teams from 45 schools in Plymouth, East Cornwall and West Devon participated in 13th annual primary mixed hockey festival held at the University of St Mark & St John. The event was as popular as ever enabling over 500 primary age pupils to participate in the 2 day competition organised by Sporting Dynamics and Plymouth Schools Hockey supported by the University of St Mark & St John as hosts and sponsors Plymouth College, Gryphon Hockey and Redrok
Mount House retained the cup and skills challenge competition narrowly defeating Horrabridge Primary 2-1 in the final. St Andrews Buckland Monachorum defeated Keyham Barton RC to finish third and fourth. In the shield Kelly Prep defeated St Andrews Plymouth, Dunstone 3rd and Oakwood 4th. In the Plate Tregadillet defeated Yealmpstone Farm, Darite 3rd and Morice Town Primary 4th.
Young leaders from the local schools umpired all the games who were supported with their development which is a key part of the successful event. Libby Grahame from Callington Community College received the DCHUA Julia Gill young umpire award in recognition of her umpiring. University students took charge of the skills challenge team competition run inside the sports hall which proved very popular.
Founder of the event Jamie Oxley said "the festival is such a popular event with more teams wanting to enter now than spaces so we will have to look to increase the capacity some now!. The event also enables a team of 30 young leaders and club volunteers to assist with the smooth running without whom the festival would not have been such a success. Once again the sun shone for 2 days which added to the buzz of the event".
The legacy from the event is the opportunity for players to attend a 4 week coaching programme to develop the players skills to progress into club hockey and the single system.
